LETTERS TO THE 20TH CENTURY CHURCH
(From "When All Else Fails" by Bob Smith)

And to Diotrephes, Pastor of the Church of Selflove

Do you really think I would rest the success of my Church on a few dominant personalities like you?  Have you not read my Word about humility and "esteeming others better than yourself?"  Have you not heard that the Body, though one, has many members?  You seem to want to make it all mouth.  But I say, "The Head cannot say to the Foot, I have no need of you."  Do you remember who the Head is?

Repent, therefore, and go back to your original assignment.  "Pastor - Teachers are given to equip the Saints for the work of the Ministry!"  How I groan at the way you have tied me up because you want to be the whole show, while gifted men and women play spectators.

Look!  I'm coming soon to evaluate your works !  I'd like for you to be able to look me straight in the eye and hear my "Well done!" - not to see you hang your head in shame.

SOME THOUGHTS ON BIBLE STUDY ....
We of the Church of Christ, with our roots set in a restoration movement, have often and loudly and proudly claimed to be People of the Book.  When asked, "What is your Church's Creed?", we respond that our Creed is the New Testament.  We say that we are founded on the Word of God alone.  "Where the Bible speaks, we speak. - Where it is silent, we are silent," is a catch-phrase of the restoration movement.  Yet, how often is it heard that one can't understand the Bible on his own, that's why we have preachers.

If you don't have your own general format for personal Bible study, then let me suggest one for your use.  I hope that you will find it helpful.

1.  Outline the passage of Scripture under consideration.  If it is a long passage, (like a whole book), then do a brief general outline of the whole thing and then outline in detail each smaller section as you come to it.

2.  Paraphrase the Scripture.  That is, try to put the thought of the passage into your own words.  Pay careful attention to context.  Notice repeated emphasis.  Use various translations.  Look up words for alternate meanings or synonyms.

3.  Generalize.  If the Bible does not make a specific application in your passage, then seek a generalization.  That is, a statement that will sum up the impact of the Bible's view of reality on human experience.  You can often do this by - (a) isolating key thoughts; (b) summarize them; (c) make a generalization from them.

4.  Apply.  Don't be tempted to stop at the generalization.  They are not very usable.  We need to define those areas of life which the discovered truth affects.  So, make a list of all the various applications to areas of life that the Biblical truth affects.

5.  Personalize the application.  Pull out the area(s) most relevant to your personal needs from your list of general applications.

6.  Make a determination.  Set down your goal of how you will seek to apply what you have learned.

REMEMBER, just to have a knowledge of what the Bible says doesn't mean anything.  It is the person who is translating what the Bible says into his everyday life that has God excited.

Praying that the foregoing thoughts on Bible Study will be of help to you.

-- Steve.

WE WELCOME
Bryan Kirby as our guest speaker this morning.
Today sees a "Pulpit Exchange" taking place throughout the Nelson District.  Steve is preaching at the Richmond Church of Christ this morning and Tony is preaching at Annesbrook.

OFFERING FOR THE PRESTIDGE FAMILY
It is time once again for our quarterly offering to aid the Prestidges while David is at Bible College in Melbourne.
We will make our offering on 31st July, so please plan ahead now.  It means a great deal to a family in Bible College to receive just a little boost financially, so that the unexpected emergencies can be dealt with. - (Like a power bill for two months that amounted to $56 Aust.) !
A couple of things that you can be praying for, regarding David and Barbara -
(1) David is sitting his first exams - always a traumatic experience.
(2) Barbara is soon to go into the hospital.

YOUNG PEOPLE -
The Richmond Church of Christ Young People are sponsoring a Sportsnight at the Y.M.C.A. next Saturday.
There will be volleyball, basketball, table tennis, and much more.  Bring some money to purchase a snack.  We will meet at the Church, and leave at ? o'clock.  (It's up to you to find out the departure time.  Only one person knows!  Who is it?  Good luck!)

CALLING ALL CHORISTERS !
When Dominion Conference is held in Nelson at Labour Weekend, there is to be a combined choir, made up from our churches in the district.  Volunteers are required to represent Motueka. - Please see Mrs. Light if you are interested.  It is probable that we will learn the individual parts here, and then travel to Nelson for one or two final practices with the complete choir.
