LETTERS TO THE 20TH CENTURY CHURCH
(From "When All Else Fails" by Bob Smith)

To the First Right Wing Church

What is my gospel?  Is it meant for political liberals as well as conservatives?  Labour and Nationals alike?  Can it change a hippie's heart?  Can it break a heroin habit?  Or is it meant just to maintain the status quo of comfortable New Zealand complacency?  Have you not read, "My kingdom is not of this world - if it were my servants would fight"?  If political notion were all I had in mind it would have been accomplished by "twelve legions of angels."  Instead I chose the Cross.  Are you stronger than twelve legions of angels?  And wiser than I?

How many hours have you squandered on pointless political intrigue?  Have you told any Good News to anyone?  Are you so foolish as to think you can change governments without changing men's hearts?  You can still change your mind and do it my way!  Ask me, I'll enable you.

JESUS CHRIST
the Ruler of Kings.

THE CREED OF THE CHURCH
Our Faith is always liable to be erroneous in many respects and our practice is likely to be even more so.  But the Bible is perfect, as its divine author is perfect.  And hence it should be our constant aim to test our thoughts, words and actions by this divine standard; but never go beyond it.  All efforts to transcend this limit are attempts at reformation in the wrong direction.

Happy, then, would it be for the Church today if she had always contended earnestly for the creed delivered to the saints by the inspired apostles.  But the pride of the human heart is amazing.  There is a constant inclination on the part of fallen man to make his own opinions the standard by which to judge everything else.  And so the faith of the Church was reduced to writing, and in a great measure substituted for the inspired creed of the apostles and prophets.  But the trouble did not stop here.  Very soon different opinions were entertained respecting the meaning of the newly formed creed; and so the necessity of correcting it.  A third creed was formed, and a fourth, and a fifth; but every attempt at creed-making has only served to destroy the unity of the faith, to multiply sects and parties, and to lead away the minds and hearts of the people from the earnest and prayerful study of the Holy Scriptures, which alone are able to make us wise, even unto salvation.

And so it is evident that every attempt to unite the people of God on any human basis must ever prove utterly vain and abortive.  The only possible way to accomplish this end is to throw aside all human creeds, and take the Bible, the whole Bible, and nothing but the Bible, as our rule of faith and practice.

AMONG OUR PEOPLE .......
A WARM WELCOME

to any visitors with us this week.  We hope that you were uplifted by the Worship Service this morning, were inspired by the teaching from God's Word, and felt the presence of God in the gathering together of His people.

NEXT SUNDAY'S PREACHER
will be Tony Barnett.  Because he has been so busy in helping out other churches in the district, we haven't had many chances to hear Tony preach during the past few months.  Next Sunday will bring the opportunity we have been waiting for as we welcome Tony back to our pulpit.

YOUNG PEOPLE.....
The Labour Weekend Youth Camp (21-24 October), is to be held at the Maitai Baptist Camp in Nelson.  This camp is for all young people, 15 years and over.  The camp fee is $7.  Leader for the camp will be Rick Keller.  This will be the last camp he will share in before returning to the U.S.A.  Make your plans now, since the best cabins will go to those who register early.  See Steve for Registration Forms.
